How do I keep a baby chick or duck alive?!?
I'm getting a baby duck or chick, and I was just wondering the care for it I'll need? If anyone could help that would be great!
I don't mean to be disagreeable, but I think that it's incorrect to tell you not to handle them. Handling them from a young age will make them much more agreeable to human contact throughout their life. I think it's important to hold them at a young age.
But.. will it be a duck, or a chick? The requirements are different.
You'll need a heat lamp for the first 4 weeks, at least. Ducklings eat duckling starter feed, and chicks eat chick starter! Make sure if you have a duckling that you do NOT feed it medicated chick feed. Fruits and veggies are a good supplement, but make sure to cut them up small enough for the babies to eat. Things like dandelion and clover are good, too!
You can line the bottom of the tub (or box, whatever you have them in) with straw or old towels. Don't use newspaper, as this can give them splayed leg because it's so slippery. I prefer towels. They have to be washed, but you can alternate 2 or 3 towels and it becomes second nature.
As for water, ducklings need water constantly. I used a tupperware dish with a hole cut into the lid so they couldn't get into the water. They will try!! Make sure they have water and food available at all times.
Don't take them out TOO often, but do take them out. This is the time to acclimate them to you and your family and PEOPLE. Ducks and chickens can be just like any other pet if introduced to humans early and often! But make sure to keep them warm.
Ducks can swim right off the bat, but they don't have the oils to repel water, so they'll get waterlogged quickly. If you let them swim, don't let them stay too long, maybe 5-10 minutes at most. Make sure the water is warm, and dry them thoroughly! :]
It's hard for me to help without knowing which you'll get.. I, personally, know a lot about ducks, but not as much about chicks. A good website to visit is www.liveducks.com. I always recommend it, it has a lot of great care information about ducks.

Is there anything i can feed to a baby duck besides chick starter?
I won't be able to buy chick starter for 2 days because the feed store is closed and I need something else to feed to my baby duck in the meantime.

It will eat nearly anything edible to humans ... but you may need to focus on energy-rich food because as you know babies of all kinds needs a lot of energy ... like corn, wheat, barley ... whole or crushed ... and if you have some soy beans it would be great .. cause it needs protein too...
