why did the Dutch people.......?
wear clogs (wooden shoes)? Was it because they believe it is healthy for the feet or was it used for their traditional dancing? Also, was it tap dancing or what?
In most of Europe people did wear shoes with wooden 'soles' in the past, and also people in big parts of Asia.
Wood is a sturdy material that will not rot and is easy to obtain. And cheaper to work than leather. And remember that rubber is only a recent discovery in human history.
The Dutch have just kept using their all wood shoes longer than the countries around, but the Swedish wooden shoes, (with a leather toping) are worn over a much bigger part of the world now.
The reason the wooden shoes and the shoes with wooden soles are still used is that they keep your feet warm, dry in wet weather, and safe in working conditions. (There are wooden shoes that have the same safety clearance as steel-toe-capped work boots.
Wooden shoes are healty for your feet, can be made to size easily, and are great to wear once you get used to them.
And they are very easy to get out of, much easier than rubber boots which replaced them in many countries for work in the wet, so you can get out of your clogs when you come in for lunch and not make the house dirty.
For a long time those people who could afford to do so would have leather shoes for Sundays, so for dancing they would use their leather shoes.
Tap dancing comes from the traditional dancing in Ireland, where the people also had wooden soles to their shoes, clog dancing are mostly also traditional dances that are done by people wearing outfits as they would have been worn in the past.
As a child I used to wear clogs in weekends and holidays, mostly when out in the garden, I still have a couple or pairs and like to wear them doing caft shows in winter because they keep your feet much warmer than most shoes.
