How can I create a healthy daily menu for our fussy eaters?
Mu husband & I have recently come to the conclusion that we need to make some healthy changes to our family's diet. We started taking the family running and doing lite exercising. Diet is our biggest concern. We have 3 children from toddler to teen. They each have such different fussy eating habits. This makes creating a daily diet EXTREMELY difficult. Our youngest will sit at the table for hrs. without touching her food if there is so much as a vegetable on her plate. Basically the only real thing we eat around here is rice, pasta & fries with either steak or chicken. Can anyone out there give some suggestions for turning our menu into a healthy one?
Most kids have fussy eating habits so you have to be consequent at mealtimes. If a child is hungry, he'll eat, so don't make life difficult for yourself by giving in to all their fads.
My three boys went through this too when they were very young so we sat down together and worked out a plan with some rules:
1. Plan your meals together for the whole week.
2. Try and make sure you all eat together at the table - not in front of the TV.
3. If the children start moaning about what's on their plate, tell them that's all there is (unless of course you're 100% that they don't like a certain food).
4. If they don't eat what you've prepared, they do without (be firm).
5. Snacks and sweets are a week-end treat which they only get after their main meal.
I know this seems quite harsh, but after a while your children will get used to it.
Regarding the boring greens. Just put very small portions on their plates and if they don't eat them, don't fuss or worry. As long as they get enough fruit, they'll be fine.
For desert you could peel and chop some fresh fruit and place it on a plate in the middle of the table ...they'll fight over it, believe me.
PS. I read an article somwhere saying that if you plan your meals ahead and write a shopping list, you can save up to 50% on food costs.
