What type of small bag is acceptable for a guy?
It would be helpful to carry around a bag smaller than a backpack for a few items (books, water, snacks, etc.), but I don't want to look like I'm carrying a purse. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a Timbuk2 Metro bag.
A backpack would be the most suitable thing. anything else, and it would look like a murse (man purse)

Is it okay to bring luggage on the Metro in Barcelona?
I need the cheapest way to get from the airport to Catalunya Plaza. I will have1 medium-sized bag with wheels, and 1 carry-on size bag stacked on top. I don't know if the Metro can accomodate a person with bags, or if I have to negotiate stairs. There will be 2 of us, and we are not familiar with using subways. Thank you in advance.
Yes it is OK to bring bags,just try to stand near the doors as they open and close quite fast.We have got a lot of tourism and I see people with luggage all the time.But depending on the time it can be quite busy so make sure you don´t leave it unattended.Almost all the stations have got escalators,apart from some stops on the old lines,so it won´t be a problem.Plaça Catalunya has got escalators!
Actually if you take the train from the airport,it also stops in Plaça Catalunya,so you don´t need to exchange wagons.
