Why do babies need nasal aspirators?
I never understood why people always buy them for newborns, how you know when to use them, and do you actually need them??
I never, ever used one with my now 3 year old.
When I had my second, I had a home birth, so when I ordered the medical supplies, it came with them. The midwives may have used it to suction him once or twice, I don't remember. In the middle of his first night, though, he coughed up a whole bunch of mucus, which is totally normal for a newborn, but a bit alarming. It may have been nice to have nearby when that happened.
Also, he got his first runny nose at 3 months old (my daughter never had a sniffle until 15 months). A little baby can't blow their nose, obviously, and I was surprised at how useful I found it for relieving his congestion.
Have you used the battery operated nasal aspirator?
My son has a very thick runny nose. The hand held nasal aspirator the hospitals give out just aren't getting the job done! It sucks out a little, but most is still left in his nose. Any one use the battery operated kind that is supposed to be so much better? Also, what did you give your child to help with a runny nose (runny and a little green for 1 week)? Yes, I called the MD and they said not to worry until it's been 2 weeks of green mucous. Thanks!
I have one and it works well for me and my little one! I bought the BEBE SOUNDS kind, and it plays music to distract the baby. I started using it with him very early on, and he is about to be 18 months, and when he has a runny nose he knows what it is for and will sit there and let me clean his nose.
Also, you may need to check and see if your little one has seasonal allergies. If he does, a little pediatric benadryl or zyrtec will clear it up. There is also this homeopathic line of products that can be for infants called HYLAND"S. i use this line for my baby and it is pretty good as well.
