Is infant baptism just hearsay?
As an adult, you'd have no recollection of it except for a piece of paper certifying it, if you ever see it anyway. And if you don't get baptized, Christians would be raised Christian anyway and wouldn't have needed it. At least with adult baptism you could know what you did and then live under it if it was supposed to be continuation of an Old Testament covenant. And if your parents were baptized in infancy, who's to say anything about any guarantees of salvation? Doesn't it make a sacrament into a he-said, she-said? Forget infant baptism entirely, just raise the kids Christian!
I believe you know where I stand ... that I hold to believers' baptism.
However, my dear Don, once again, you cannot "raise the kids Christian." You Are to be faithful instructing the children in the ways of the Lord ... but only the Lord Himself can make our kids Christian.
No, we don't assume they're Christians until they demonstrate otherwise. The Bible is crystal clear that we are all born in the Adamic Covenant of Works & continue under the curse of sin until such time as we are mercifully plucked from dangling above the red coals & placed under the Covenant of Grace through the perfect redeeming work of our Savior Jesus Christ. Then, & only then, may each INDIVIDUAL be reconciled to a thrice holy God.
