Should I body clip my horse?

My trainer just clipped her stud colts and her stallion for show season and her season starts when our does. My horse isn't shedding fast enough. Should I clip her? If I do, will she be okay in the snowy weather with just her winter blanket? I just don't want her to get cold.

If your going to be showing your horse in halter or any other ground/strip class then i would recomend clipping him/her. Keep in mind though that if your horse isnt shedding then they probally still need there coat for warmth. You need to make sure that you use an appropiate amount of blankets for your climate. If its still really cold you should really think about buying a hooded blanket to keep the horses neck and face warm. Good Luck at the shows!

is it ok to body clip a 3 yr old?

So, I've been giving my horse a lot of workouts lately, and in order for him to sweat efficiently and to dry off easier I want to body clip him. HE'S A PALOMINO PAINT, soo, I'm worried that his color may change. Do you think his color will change? And is it ok to layer 2-3 different blankets on him and a sleazy for after he's clipped? I was thinking about doing 1 fleece cooler, a wool blanket, and my 1200 denier waterproof, breathable blanket. What do you think?? What experiances have you had body clipping horses?

If he is getting that much work that he's is going to be very sweaty consistently throughout the winter, than yes, I would clip him. You always want to give the least amount as clip as you can get away with. A bib, apron, or low trace clip if you can get away with it would be best. This would be for moderate work throughout the winter, for a horse that is blanketed but is still turned out a good portion of the time. Medium or high trace clip for a horse that is getting quite a bit of regular work, has good blanketing, and has very good shelter access if being kept outside a good majority of the time. A hunter clip is generally the most I will go with the exception of a horse being kept in extremely heavy work and on a competition schedule throughout the winter, those receive a full body clip. The hunter clip leaves the head, legs, as well as the space under the saddle unclipped. Legs unclipped is very important if the horse gets any turnout, and not clipping the space under the saddle is very helpful for comfort sake. Just like a stubbly beard or a man's fresh crew cut the hair will stand up where cut, and you do not want to place a saddle and person on top of that new prickly hair, many horses develop irritations from it (even on my full clip horses I will not clip that area short). With any of this just be very careful with blanketing. Layers are essential and having multiples of the innermost layers is a must so that they can be washed regularly while having replacements on hand. Every horse is different and need different degrees of blanketing. You must just be sure to check them daily and readjust and smooth blankets and check that they do not feel too cold or too hot.

Clipping is not going to change his color, it can make it look as if it has though when clipped, but that's because the hair will be that much shorter initially, it's sort of an illusion. He will still look perfectly fine as it begins to grow back in again and after the winter months.
