what causes white colored toys to turn yellow?
I have some vintage collection toys from the 70's and their color is starting to turn yellow. what causes this and can i do anything to fix it?
I've had this problem with vintage SW toys. The yellowing in plastic is caused by exposure to UV radiation (sunlight). All materials are susceptible to it at some level, but it shows up on white items more quickly. (Paper items like comics are another big sufferer) Plastic objects also tend to use mold release and fire retardant agents that can quicken the damage. Your best bet it to keep toys you want to preserve out of direct light.
If you're trying to fix something, there are several possible solutions, but keep in mind the plastic has been chemically changed...bleaching and such may not work and you may have to settle for simply painting over.
